Harmonisation of labelling of wines – Language

RESOLUTION ECO 1/2006

HARMONISATION OF LABELLING OF WINES – LANGUAGE

THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY,

CONSIDERING the OIV International Standard for the labelling of wines,

CONSIDERING the Codex Alimentarius Standard for the labelling of pre-packaged foods,

CONSIDERING that the prescriptions concerning labelling constitute standards that must not create unnecessary obstacles to international trade in terms of the Agreement on technical barriers to trade of the World Trade Organisation,

CONSIDERING Resolution ECO 1/2005 and that it is advisable to complete the O.I.V standard by further recommendations concerning the presentation of mandatory indications,

ADOPTS the following amendments to the International Standard for the labelling of wines:

Article 1.3 is deleted and articles 1.4, 1.5 and 1.6 are renumbered accordingly.

A new article 4.2 is added, entitled “Language”.

4.2. Language

4.2.1 The language used must be easily understandable for the consumer.

4.2.2 If the language used is not understandable for the consumer for whom the wine is intended, the label must be replaced or a supplementary label added containing the mandatory information at chapter 2 of this standard, in the required language.

4.2.3 In the cases as provided in Article 4.2.2, the mandatory information provided shall fully and accurately reflect that in the original label.
