Harmonisation of labelling of wines – Alcoholic strength

HARMONISATION OF LABELLING OF WINES – ALCOHOLIC STRENGTH

THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY,

CONSIDERING the OIV International Standard for the labelling of wines,

CONSIDERING the Codex Alimentarius Standard for the labelling of pre-packaged foods,

CONSIDERING that the prescriptions concerning labelling constitute standards that must not create unnecessary obstacles to international trade in terms of the Agreement on technical barriers to trade of the World Trade Organisation,

CONSIDERING Resolution ECO 1/2005 and that it is advisable to complete the O.I.V standard by further recommendations concerning the presentation of mandatory indications,

ADOPTS the following amendments to the International Standard for the labelling of wines:

A new article 4.4 is added, entitled “Presentation of information on alcoholic strength”.

4.4 Presentation of information on alcoholic strength

The actual alcoholic strength shall be labelled with the sign "%" and with the terms "volume", "vol.", or “vol” and may be accompanied by the terms "alcohol", “alc" or “alc.".
