RESOLUTION OIV-OENO 441-2011

MODIFICATION OF THE MONOGRAPH ON BENTONITES

The GENERAL ASSEMBLY

In view of article 2, paragraph 2 iv of the Agreement of 3 April 2001, by which the International Organisation of Vine and Wine was founded,

CONSIDERING resolution OENO 11/2003 adopted by the OIV in 2003 concerning the monograph on bentonites and the existence of bentonites at low pH

Following a proposal made by the "Specifications of oenological products" experts group

DECIDE to modify the current monography on bentonites published in the International Oenological Codex as follows:

Under Point 3.TEST TRIALS

Point 3.2 is modified as follow:

Shake 5g of bentonite with 100 ml of distilled water for 5 minutes. Allow to stand for 1 hour. Measure the pH level of the supernatant liquid. Natural calcium bentonites have a neutral pH (level around 6.5 to 8.5) whereas activated calcium bentonites have a much more alkaline pH (level around 8.5 to 10.0). Natural sodium bentonites have a wider range of pH (level around 4.7 to 10.0)
