INTEGRATED VINEYARD PRODUCTION

THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY,

HAVING HEARD the reports presented during the 76th General Assembly of Cape Town on viticultural techniques designed to better respect the environment,"

NOTES

That the viticulture sector is capable of occupying and deriving value from a wide variet of different environments;

That grape vines are effectively adapted to a wide variety of environments but only on the condition that a variety of factors are controlled, in particular:

  • plant growth
  • soil management
  • growing system
  • protection against pests and pathogens;

That consumers and producers pay more attention to the hygienic quality of grape products as well as to the adherence to good environmental practices during production,

OBSERVES

That numerous countries have taken the following items into account and implemented cultural and phytosanitary measures with the goal of respecting the environment and improving product quality,

RECOMMENDS,

IN GENERAL:

  • That member states encourage the harmonious development of INTEGRATED VINEYARD PRODUCTION strategies in such a manner as to improve the prevention and limitation of the impact on producers and the biological and non-biological environment while maintaining quality and typicality goals unique to each situation,

IN PARTICULAR

  • That methods of objective measures of environmental factors that interact with viticultural practices be updated and placed into effect,
  • That growing techniques which favor environmental preservation and reduce the risk of damage from pests or pathogens be updated and popularized,
  • That integrated strategies be developed while taking into account the interaction between pests and pathogens on the one hand and those of auxiliary fauna and flora on the other hand.
