RESOLUTION AGE 1/2003

THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY

CONSIDERING the resolutions adopted in Adelaide OENO 6/2001 "Fermenting must or wines in contact with wood", OENO 7/2001 "Fermentation in small capacity wooden containers", OENO 8/2001 "Aging in small capacity wooden containers" and Oeno 9/2001 "Usage of pieces of oak wood in winemaking",

CONSIDERING the Declaration of the General Assembly adopted at the time of the approval of the Resolution Oeno 9/2001 which requested at the latest for its 2003 meeting:

  • The International Oenological Codex sheet concerning the prescriptions to which the pieces of oak wood must comply, be established,
  • And that Commission III "Vitivinicultural Economy" be able to propose consumer information means for the wines concerned.

RECOGNISES the difficulties in meeting the mandate drafted in Adelaide,

DECIDES that the concerned works should take into account the following elements:

  • the advantages and disadvantages in relation to putting wine in contact with wood,
  • food safety,
  • commercial practices concerning wood preparation
  • appropriate and necessary traceability,

Requests Commission II "Oenology"

  • that the work on the definition of pieces of oak wood be finalised and presented at the latest at the General Assembly in 2005,
  • that an identical work on the definition be carried out for wood containers and presented at the latest at the General Assembly in 2005,

Requests Commission III "Vitivinicultural economy"

  • To initiate a global reflection on the needs for consumer information on oenological practices and that the resulting general principles including labelling be evaluated and be subject to a progress report at the General Assembly in 2005,
  • To examine more particularly in the same time frame consumer information means in relation to putting wine in contact with wood,
  • To identify and define the labelling terms related to the oenological practices of putting wine in contact with wood and to present them at the General Assembly in 2005.
