Conservation of diversity
RESOLUTION VITI 1/2002
CONSERVATION OF DIVERSITY
GENERAL ASSEMBLY,
BASED ON THE PROPOSAL by Commission I “Viticulture”
GIVEN THE WORK of the XXIIIrd World Congress of vine and wine held in Lisbon, Portugal from June 22 – 24 June 1998 on the theme of “World wine growing patrimony at risk: the need to maintain it”
CONSIDERING the need to preserve the world viticulture genetic heritage already recommended by the O.I.V. to:
- Maintain the diversity of vine products
- Satisfy consumers’ demands
CONSIDERING the array of work completed in many countries on cloning selection and the importance of clones in future wine growing,
RECOMMENDS THE MEMBER COUNTRIES:
- to maintain from the carrying out of these works the greatest genetic diversity possible in terms of morphology, agronomic behavior (production, response to parasites, adaptation to surroundings) and technological value,
and
- to favour the development of little known grape varieties of high quality potential and the adaptation of cultivation techniques in order to optimise quality.
