Conservation of vine's genetic ressources

RESOLUTION OIV/VITI 424/2010

CONSERVATION OF VINE’S GENETIC RESOURCES

THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY

On the proposal of Commission I « Viticulture »,

IN VIEW OF the progress achieved by the works developed within the « Genetic Resources and Vine Selection » expert group,

CONSIDERING the urgent need to protect the valuable world heritage of vine varieties and species which are facing increasing risks of genetic erosion, definitive disappearance of original genotypes and overall diversity depletion,

CONSIDERING the results of the large number of recently published scientific works focusing on the analysis of vine genetic diversity

CONSIDERING the strategic interest of genetic resources in terms of an approach to vine improvement,

RECOMMENDS the Member states:

  • To launch as soon as possible large search campaigns in order to list endangered wild and cultivated plant material and to identify, where relevant, original or not yet described and referenced genotypes,
  • To promote, including by means of specific regulations, all conservation in situ possibilities of this plant material (protection of plants and natural areas and on farm- conservation),
  • To actively support research in order to improve the different systems (including double security) and possible conservation modes: ex situ (collections in open fields, green houses), in vitro and by cryoconservation,

DECIDES to entrust the OIV with drawing up a world inventory of genetic resource conservatories devoted to vines in view to build up a directory of the accessions of the varieties conserved.
