METHODS OF SOIL CONSERVATION

THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY,

BASED ON THE PROPOSAL of Commission I, “ Viticulture ”, taking into account the work relative to the physiological effects of soil conservation methods and

CONSIDERING, on one hand, the existence of serious problems posed by the pollution of the environment and by the appearance of weed species that have become resistant because of the use of herbicides and, on the other hand, the pressing need to preserve the character of viticultural soils,

DRAWS the attention of the Member Countries to the need to research and develop ail the methods of soil conservation that represent an alternative to totally chemical weed control and a guarantee of conservation of soils against érosion, while permitting the attainment of the following fundamental objectives:

  • control of vigor and yields,
  • improvement of quality and sanitary state of the grape,
  • facilitation of cultural practices, manual or mechanized,
  • economizing on the use of fertilizers and treatment products.

IN ADDITION, DRAWS the attention of viticultural countries to the already proven interest of certain techniques such as controlled permanent cover crops or soil mulching and also to the need to adapt these techniques to the précisé soil and climate conditions of the vineyard.
